COVID-19 Immunisation Workforce

Nurses will continue to play a critical role in Australia's recovery from the pandemic as the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out commences next week.

Caring for You Nursing Agency welcomes the announcement by the Federal Government that the first shipment of the Pfizer vaccine, which has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, has now been received in Australia in readiness for the first stage of the vaccine roll-out from Monday 22 February.

Caring for You also welcomes today's announcement by the Federal Government that the TGA has approved the AstraZeneca vaccine for use in Australia and anticipates the first shipment of this vaccine to Australia in early March, if not sooner.

We also welcome the domestic production of the AstraZeneca vaccine by CSL in Melbourne, which is expected to produce a million doses per week by the end of March and is presently subject to TGA-approval.

During the first phase of the national roll-out strategy, it will be frontline nurses who receive COVID-19 vaccines as a priority population and administer the vaccines to other frontline healthcare workers, aged care residents and staff and quarantine and border workers.Caring for You looks forward to the opportunity to have our nurses on the frontline of the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland in GP-clinics, residential aged care facilities and hospitals.

The Federal Government advises that Registered Nurses without National Immunisation Program certification and Enrolled Nurses will be able to administer COVID-19 vaccinations under the direction of a GP, if they have undertaken the Federal Department of Health's COVID-19 training. These nurses will be primarily used in general practice settings.

Registered Nurses with National Immunisation Program certification who have completed the Federal Department of Health COVID-19 training will be able to administer COVID-19 vaccinations independently, without the direction of a GP. These nurses will be primarily used in mass vaccination hubs, workplaces, industry, councils and residential aged care facilities.

Last year, Caring for You was a leading provider to the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services for the surge workforce in 2020 and received commendations from WorkSafe Victoria and DHHS for setting the benchmark standards for COVID-19 health and safety procedures in aged care.

Our organisation won several awards for our services to the aged care industry, including a Bronze Stevie International Award for Best Practice Response to the 2020 Pandemic, a 2020 finalist listing for APSCo Australia's Best Response to the 2020 Pandemic WHS, and being a finalist for the 2020 RCSA Industry Awards for Excellence in Customer Service.

We look forward to stepping up to the challenge again this year by administering COVID-19 vaccines to protect Australians from the effects of COVID-19 and help our society to reopen.
